Return to the Tomb Of Horrors: Updates on D&D Onslaught’s Deadliest Expansion

Fans of tactical combat and classic dungeon crawls will have to wait just a little longer to face the multiverse’s most feared demilich. WizKids recently announced a shift in the release schedule for the highly anticipated D&D Onslaught: Tomb of Horrors expansion, while also sharing some surprising (and budget-friendly) updates regarding the product’s launch.

Whether you’re a veteran of the 1975 original or a newcomer to the Onslaught skirmish system, here is everything you need to know about the upcoming release.

New Launch Date and Pricing

Originally slated for a February 2026 arrival, WizKids has officially pushed the release window back.

  • New Release Date: May 2026

  • Updated MSRP: In a rare move for the industry, WizKids has actually lowered the price from the original $59.99 estimate to a more accessible $49.99.

Surviving the Legend

This expansion brings one of the most infamous modules in tabletop history into the D&D Onslaught competitive skirmish ecosystem. Originally penned by Gary Gygax for the 1975 Origins International Game Expo, Tomb of Horrors is legendary for being a “meat grinder” designed to challenge even the most experienced players.

In this version, the gameplay has been adapted to fit the Onslaught mechanics, but the core mission remains: navigate a labyrinth of lethal traps and monstrous guardians to confront Acererak, the iconic demilich.

What’s Inside the Box?

WizKids is focusing on a modular, customizable experience with this set. It is important to note that this expansion is designed to be backwards compatible, allowing you to bring in characters and treasures from your existing Onslaught collection.

Key Features Include:

  • Cooperative Play: New rules that allow 1–4 players to work together against the dungeon itself.

  • New Components: A fresh set of map tiles, scenarios, and encounter cards.

  • The “Token-to-Minis” System: To keep the price point lower, the expansion includes high-quality monster tokens rather than plastic miniatures. However, for those who want the full table presence, these are fully compatible with WizKids’ existing D&D miniatures lines.

  • Playtime: Expect sessions to run approximately 90 minutes, suitable for players ages 14 and up.

Why the Delay?

While WizKids hasn’t cited a specific reason for the three-month pushback, the combination of a price drop and a schedule shift often suggests a refinement of production or a desire to ensure the new cooperative mechanics are perfectly balanced. Given the “unfair” reputation of the original Gygax module, getting the difficulty “just right” for a skirmish game is no small feat.

Are you brave enough to enter the Tomb, or will Acererak add your soul to his collection?
