**EDITED – With Updated Information** Dice Throne Goes Digital: Massive Kickstarter Success Meets Fan Backlash
The beloved “Yahtzee-meets-battle-royale” board game Dice Throne is officially making the jump to screens. The digital adaptation has already smashed its initial funding goal on Kickstarter, raking in over $325,000 against a $100,000 target.
However, despite the financial success, the community isn’t entirely celebrating. A growing number of tabletop fans are voicing frustrations over the project’s pricing tiers and “always-online” requirements.
What is Dice Throne Digital?
Developed in partnership with Nerd Ninjas, the digital edition aims to translate the fast-paced, dice-rolling combat of the physical game into a cross-platform experience. The game is slated for a February 2027 release on iOS, Android, Steam, and even Meta (Mixed Reality).
At launch, players can expect:
-
Classic 1v1: The competitive head-to-head mode fans know and love.
-
Roguelite Campaign: A brand-new solo/co-op mode featuring randomized missions, power-ups, and permanent hero upgrades.
-
Hero Roster: Eight heroes will be available at launch, with more planned for future updates.
The “Freemium” Friction
While the game will eventually launch as a freemium title (where players get one hero for free and can unlock others for $9.99 or through gameplay), the Kickstarter entry point has raised eyebrows.
The primary point of contention is the $60 “Gold” Tier. While it grants access to the October beta and all eight launch heroes, fans have pointed out that buying those same heroes at launch would only cost roughly $70.
“We get to pay to be alpha/beta testers so the game is more polished for people who’ll be able to play for free, and all we’re offered so far are cosmetics?” — Dan, Kickstarter Backer

EDIT – Dice Throne is unveiling two new, highly accessible pledge tiers and a $10 price reduction on premium levels to welcome more players into the digital arena.
“From the beginning, our goal has been to make the Dice Throne Digital arena a place where all fans can play together,” said Nate Chatellier, Co-creator of Dice Throne and President of Nerd Ninjas. “After listening to our community’s feedback, we’ve expanded our pledge options and adjusted our pricing to make it easier for more fans to join us on this journey. Whether you’re jumping in at launch or partnering with us through our Backstage Access tiers to help build the most feature-rich version of the game possible, every backer is a vital part of the team bringing this dream to life.”
I applaud for listening to player feedback during to crowdfund audience and making these adjustments. Kudos to the team!
Connectivity and AI Concerns
The pricing isn’t the only hurdle. The community has also highlighted two major missing features:
-
No Offline Mode: The roguelike campaign currently requires an internet connection, a dealbreaker for mobile players who want to play on the go.
-
Lack of 1v1 AI: At present, the 1v1 mode is focused on human-vs-human play, leaving those who prefer solo practice against a computer in the dark.
Backer Seb summarized the sentiment of many: “If an offline mode is not implemented, I may just wait for the free version and play without paying.”
The Bottom Line
Dice Throne Digital is clearly a highly anticipated project, but the developers at Nerd Ninjas and the Dice Throne team have some work to do to win back the “hearts and minds” of their core tabletop audience. Whether the team will pivot on the offline requirements or add more value to the $60 tier remains to be seen.
Are you backing the digital version, or will you be sticking to the physical dice and boards?
