Remembering Louis Zocchi: The Legacy of “The Godfather of Dice”
The gaming world has lost a true pioneer. On April 15, 2026, Louis Zocchi passed away at the age of 91. Known affectionately by peers as “The Colonel,” “Major Lou,” and most famously, “The Godfather of Dice,” Zocchi’s influence on tabletop gaming and wargaming is foundational.
From his early days at Avalon Hill to the creation of high-precision polyhedrals, Zocchi’s career spanned the evolution of the modern hobby.
A Career Born from Service
Before becoming a fixture in the gaming industry, Zocchi served ten years in the U.S. Air Force during the 1960s. Upon his return to civilian life, he joined Avalon Hill, where he became one of the original editors of The General magazine. His sharp eye for mechanics led him to playtest seminal wargames such as Bismarck, Afrika Korps, and Jutland.
Zocchi was also an accomplished designer in his own right. His credits include:
-
Luftwaffe and The Battle of Britain
-
Alien Space and Flying Tigers
-
Star Fleet Battle Manual, a pioneering set of rules for starship miniatures.
Beyond design, Zocchi was committed to helping others enter the field, self-publishing the guide How to Sell Your Wargame Design.
Revolutionizing the Roll: Gamescience and the “Zocchihedron”
While his design work was significant, Zocchi’s most enduring legacy lies in the tools we use to play. In 1974, he founded Gamescience, a company dedicated to producing high-quality, precision-engineered dice.
Zocchi was a vocal advocate for “fair dice,” famously critiquing mass-produced dice for having rounded edges that caused inconsistent rolls. He was the first to bring polyhedral dice to the U.S. market and expanded the gamer’s toolkit by designing unique shapes, including the d3, d5, d14, and d24. His most famous creation, the 100-sided die, was aptly named the Zocchihedron in his honor.
A Lifetime of Industry Impact
Zocchi’s influence extended into the logistics of the hobby as well. He founded Zocchi Distributing, a key player in game distribution until its sale in 1996.
His peers recognized his immense contributions with numerous accolades:
-
1986: Inducted into the Charles Roberts Awards Hall of Fame.
-
2022: Honored at Gary Con IV with the E. Gary Gygax Lifetime Achievement Award.
Louis Zocchi’s passion for precision and his charismatic presence at conventions made him a legend to generations of players. He wasn’t just a designer or a businessman; he was a guardian of the hobby’s integrity. Our thoughts are with his friends and family as we celebrate a life that truly changed how the world plays.
