End of an Era: Osprey Games Board & Card Game Lines Up for Sale

The tabletop landscape is shifting today as Bloomsbury Publishing officially announced that it is seeking a buyer for the board and card game divisions of Osprey Games. The news broke via their BlueSky account, signaling a major strategic pivot for the storied publisher.

A Decade of Tabletop Excellence

Since its inception in 2014, Osprey’s board game wing has punched well above its weight class. What started as a venture into hobby gaming quickly turned into a powerhouse of critical acclaim. Over the last ten years, they’ve curated a catalog that most publishers would envy:

  • The Undaunted Series: David Thompson and Trevor Benjamin’s deck-building masterpiece that redefined tactical WWII combat.

  • Martin Wallace Designs: Collaborations with the legendary designer that brought us titles like London and Wildlands.

  • Award-Winning Pedigree: In 2022, their deduction hit Cryptid earned a prestigious Kennerspiel des Jahres nomination, cementing Osprey’s status as a top-tier Eurogame publisher.

  • Recent Hits: The division has remained active right up to the present with releases like War Story: Occupied France.

Back to the Roots: The “Why” Behind the Sale

The decision isn’t about a lack of success, but rather a refocusing of identity. Bloomsbury intends to steer the Osprey unit back to its “bread-and-butter”: book publishing.

Osprey has been the gold standard for military history since the debut of the Men-at-Arms series in 1971. By moving away from board and card games, the company aims to pour its resources back into its core strengths:

  1. Military History Books

  2. Miniature Wargames (like Frostgrave, Silver Bayonet and Bolt Action)

  3. Tabletop RPGs (TTRPGs)

What Happens Next?

If you’re a fan of their current catalog, there’s no need to panic just yet. While Osprey goes through this transitional period, here is the roadmap:

  • Business as Usual (For Now): Osprey will continue to sell, release, and license the games currently on their production schedule.

  • The “No New Commissions” Rule: While they are honoring current commitments, they will not be signing or commissioning any brand-new board or card game projects.

  • Finding a New Home: Bloomsbury is actively looking for a buyer to take over these lines. Given the high quality of the IP involved—especially the Undaunted brand—industry experts expect significant interest from other major hobby publishers.

It’s bittersweet to see such a consistent hit-maker exit the space, but it opens the door for these beloved titles to find a new steward. We’ll be watching closely to see where the likes of Cryptid and Undaunted land next.
